Child Obesity

All parents want their children to grow up healthy and happy. Of course, there are many factors that can play a role in the weight and health of your child. More and more parents are turning to our team here at Good Health Pediatrics to make sure their children are getting a proper, balanced diet and the everyday care they need to prevent and even treat childhood obesity.

According to the CDC, about one in five children between the ages of 6 to 19 years old are obese. A child who is obese has a body mass index (BMI) above the 95 percentile of both children and teens the same age. It’s a shocking statistic, we know!

Being obese doesn’t just affect your child’s mindset but also their physical health, as well. Children who are obese are more at risk of developing other chronic and potentially serious health problems such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease and joint issues.

Fortunately, our pediatric team is here to provide you with simple lifestyle changes that you can implement within the household to prevent obesity or to reduce your child’s weight. The first and most important factor is your child’s diet. Avoid keeping sodas, fruit juices, prepackaged meals and sugar-laden treats in the house and instead incorporate healthy sources of protein, vegetables and fresh fruits and whole grains into daily mealtimes and snacks.

Besides eating a healthy diet it’s important that your child is physically active. Whether this means joining a school sports team or playing indoors, make sure to limit time spent with electronics and make sure your child gets out and adds a little fitness to their daily regimen, whether that’s in the form of playing tag with neighborhood kids or kicking a soccer ball around the backyard.

Of course, we also realize that it takes proper support from those around you and from doctors to ensure that your child is getting the care they need every day. Whether you need advice on improving your child’s diet or to determine the best exercises for your little one, our team of pediatric professionals is here for you and your family.

If you have questions about your child’s diet or want to learn more about preventing childhood obesity in your little one then call Good Health Pediatrics in Friendswood, TX today at (281) 534-9355.
